The first incarnation of Rapid Fire ran between 2001 and 2005 and featured a wide range of artists and writers alongside a core of Underfire creators. While originally conceived as a periodical comic anthology it has since been described as ‘Talisman plus back up strips’ after the ongoing series that constituted the core of the five numbered issues. This perception, plus the other projects Underfire creators started to get involved in helped cement the title’s downfall after Talisman came to an end – but now it’s back, with a new editor and a new lease of life.

The insistence on high production values that typified the original Rapid Fire provided a stepping stone for a number of creators out of the small press and into commercial publishing. Nick Dyer, a Rapid Fire staple, is now drawing Judge Dredd while fellow 2000AD droid Al Ewing also had early work in the anthology. Meanwhile, staying in the small press, original editor and Underfire founder Colin Dinnie re-invigorated the Zarjaz anthology and turned it back into a dynamic and highly acclaimed publication.
